There is a calf in my truck!!

We moved again, are you surprised? hopefully this is the last time. We were renting until we found a place to buy that we liked. While I was unpacking, again, I found my old phone. It had all kinds of pictures on it that I forgot about. I love finding old pictures! I found the pictures of my calf  I had to take to the vet.
My daughter sympathizing with the calf
The calf had pneumonia. I had been treating with him with an injectable antibiotic but it wasn't working. He was feeling awful, had a high fever, and was coughing. I wasn't sure he would make it through the weekend. It was a Friday afternoon, I called the vet. She said she was getting ready to close for the weekend and she didn't have time for a house call but that she would see him if I brought him down. I had no choice but to put him in the cab of my truck. A calf looks small but when you have to pick one up they are pretty heavy! This guy was no help. I got his front legs up into the truck, then shoved his back end in. He barely fit. As I went to close the door he fell out backwards like a wet noodle. He landed half under the truck. Then I had to grab his legs and drag him out. At this point he refused to even stand up. I don't even remember how I got him in the second time. All I remember was that he was really heavy , he was like a wet noodle, and that I had to go to the chiropractor afterwards.
Got him crammed in there!
Now we are in a hurry because it took forever to get him in. Got the daughter in her car seat in the back and headed down the drive. As I get to the bottom of the drive the calf suddenly comes alive, stands up, and tries to drink my can of root beer! His long slimy tounge was all over that can! Eewwwww he can have it! I shoved him back over to his side of the truck and he turned around, got comfy, and settled back down.

So then the gas light came on, bummer, have to stop for diesel. Got lots of looks at the gas station. A big burly red haired guy kept checking me out as I was pumping diesel. There I was with my 3 year old, and a calf, in my 4 door dodge duelly. Turns rednecks on I guess. Got out of there fast as I could. It was a 45 minute drive. He behaved himself. He keep looking at me with this grin.

his bottom teeth always stuck out like that
Finally made it to the vet. She met me outside. It was quick! We opened the truck door, she listened to his heart and lungs, and gave him a few injections of a stronger antibiotic. I ran in and paid the bill and she gave me a bottle of pills for him. When we got out he had got the door open and was missing!! We ran around the building and found him nosing around a tree. That was close, he could have been hamburger! The road was right there!  So then I had to get him back in of course, oh joy. He pooed all over the truck door and the mat on the way in. Thank goodness I keep a big pack of baby wipes in the truck.

We rode home with the windows down for obvious reasons. He spent the rest of the day tied to the fence outside the kitchen door so I could keep and eye on him. He did fine, he made it through the pneumonia. I spent the rest of the evening cleaning my truck. Fun times.

He was feeling better by evening. The daughter kept him company.

Looking for Wild Horses

I had to get out of the house the other day. The husband took the daughter too the museum so I had some free time! Yay!! I had heard there were mustangs in the area and I always wanted to go find them.

I took this road for what seemed like forever. I know I was on it at least 20 miles!
After about 10 miles I passed some ruins. It was an old abandoned mining town that was built in 1906

Some house ruins

After I passed the windmill I spotted a mustang on the hillside

See him??

Then I spotted some more! They spotted me too!

They stood there and stared at me for a long time trying to decide if they were going to run away or not

Then they seemed to get a little more comfortable
Its a pregnant mare and stallion
He got tired me watching them so he herded her away

The road got more interesting from there. There were some big rock cliffs on the side of the road.

I found some petroglyphs!

Here is another one but I am sure someone from the old mining town carved it. The date they carved in it was 1916. I like the woman's head with the bun in her hair.

There was another herd of mustangs but they were farther away. It appeared to be an older stallion with some mares and yearlings. One of the yearlings was having a good time scratching her back on a low branch of this juniper.

This little filly was cute!

What a beautiful mustang!
I could have stayed all day watching the mustangs but it was getting dinner time and I had to head home. Even the scenery I saw as I was driving out of there was beautiful.

Goodbye mustangs. I will definitely be back!

Adjusting

So its been hard adjusting to New Mexico even though we had lived here before. Its familiar, and I have friends here, the brownness  is depressing and I miss having a "home". I'm the kind of girl that likes to put down roots and stay somewhere for a very long time. I have had trouble finding things to blog about. I think once we find a house (we are currently renting) life can resume and all will be well. Recently I have gone out with my camera. The beauty here is different than in Ohio and its been hard for me to see it. Here are a few pictures I have taken within the last few months.

We had freezing fog one morning. The frosted everything was beautiful!

I love the fields of grass here. When the sun hits them they are golden.

Leaving the farm

Has it really been since December that I have written a post?! I guess time got away from me again. I had started working full time at the end of December. I got a job cleaning at a high school in the evenings. Then in June we moved back to NM. I really miss our farm.  I sold our calves, and our crazy duck went to live with Aunt Cheryl. Its been quite an adjustment, even though we had lived here in NM for 10 years before we moved back to Ohio. There is no place like home. I will miss the geese that would fly over the house in the mornings and honk, the fog that settled in the hills across the road, and the lushness. I just thought I would post some of my favorite photos I took while we lived on the farm. I was glad I got to live there, even if it was only for a few years. I will always remember it.

our dog tried to swim across the pond and catch this goose, it was so funny

I loved the mums that were for sale at the farmers markets in the fall
